The
Redlegs made
a most disappointing
start to season
2008 on Friday
night at coopers
stadium being
comprehensively
beaten by
a well drilled
and skilful
Sturt.
Bryce Campbell
dropped out
of the named
squad of 22
that included
7 players
making their
debut and
just 9 from
our final
round encounter
with South
Adelaide in
2007.
The game
opened up
with typical
first round
enthusiasm,
Sturt kicking
3 goals in
the first
five minutes
of the game
and 4 in the
first 11 minutes,
as the quarter
went on the
Redlegs wrestled
momentum,
McDonnell
and Vlatko
looking dangerous
up forward,
Gallagher,
Borlace, Dawes,
Aish and Culpitt
getting their
fair share
of the ball
through the
midfield.
When the Redlegs
kicked their
4th twelve
minutes into
the second
quarter in
would be their
last for the
game as Stuart
took control
of the midfield,
dominated
around stoppages
and used the
ball with
greater effect
and feeding
key forward
Ian Perrie
who finished
with six goals.
The
home side
was hampered
after half-time
with Stuart
Bown and James
Gallagher
spending significant
time in the
doctors room,
need stiches
for face lacerations,
Aaron Kite
and Stephen
Doyle sat
out most of
the final
quarter with
a knee strain
and ankle
injury respectively.
Vice-captain
Brett Zorzi
was clearly
the teams
best player,
keeping 2007
hundred goals
kicker Brant
chambers to
just 1 goals,
a brilliant
effort considering
the amount
of for entries
the double
blues midfield
generated.
Ed McDonnell
worked tirelessly
across half-forward,
presented
and marked
well, Joel
Coombes and
Jesse Aish
made the most
of limited
opportunities,
Matthew Davis
rebounded
well from
half back
and as always
James Gallagher
did his best
to inspire
his team.
Duane Stewart
recorded a
win in his
debut as reserves
coach, his
side making
a spirited
charge after
being down
by 4 goals
at three quarter
time to run
out winners
by 3 points.
Crow Taylor
Walker was
the dominant
forward, leading
and marking
well, finishing
with 5 goals,
Matthew Brunoli
and Matthew
Bartemucci
were the best
of the onballers
while Toby
Schulz and
Brad DeVries
were strong
in defence.
Next week,
West Adelaide
at Broadspectrum
Oval, it will
be the home
side's first
hit out for
the year (having
the bye in
round 1),
as Mark Ross
so succinctly
put it after
the game,
"it wont
happen overnight
. but
it will happen".
