Norwood Go Down by 4 Points in First Trial

Norwood has gone down to South Adelaide by 4 points in our first trial game for 2008 in warm conditions at Coopers Stadium. The Redlegs took the named 25 players into the game including Taylor Walker, Matthew Brunoli and Robbie DeJongh who each played the first half of the reserves game.

In their first official outing for the club Simon Phillips and David Trotter were clearly the teams two best players. Simon played on ball and gathered many possessions, but it was when he was inside 50 that he was most damaging, on one occasion a text book rovers goals off the hands of Jamie Vlatko who bought the ball to front position. David again had plenty of the ball changing with Kris Massie at half-back, using the ball with efficiency and being the catalyst of many forward movements. Stuart Bown worked hard across his half-forward line and Ed McDonnell was a strong target at the goal front.

After a scratchy start the reserves side played some skilful football to run out winners by 42 points. James Skinner kicked 3 goals and presented and marked strongly from the goal square, St.Pauls College student and state Under 18's squad member Ryan Schoenmakers was a strong target across half forward and used the ball with pin point accuracy, Toby Schulz rebounded well from the key defensive post, and Paul Puopolo, Patrick Keain, Matthew Brunoli and Benjamin Speight (2 goals) worked hard through the midfield.

Overall it was a night where their were glimpses of what the club is looking for in 2008 however, introducing 8 new players for their first game and having access to another 4 AFL Players for the first time this season, not unexpectantly the team is yet to fully gel and play with cohesion and fluency. Last nights conditions and the need to prioritise player welfare by using the interchange bench more often for longer were hardly conducive to allowing the team to settle, of course however, it was the same for both sides and South Adelaide with 9 extra scoring shots and a strong marking Ben Warren (5 goals) simply did the job better. There is plenty of improvement needed before our Round 1 clash with Sturt, we must improve our skill execution and continue to practice and refine our game plan, structures and setups. Next week, North Adelaide at Max Basheer Reserve and a likely return of James Gallagher, Brett Zorzi, Nick Jackman and Nick Duigan.
