Preseason Training (Update #6)

With just three (3) weeks before our first trial game against South Adelaide at Coopers Stadium, the competitive juices have been flowing during skills sessions at Coopers Stadium, with match simulated exercises and tackling drills being the order of the day as game structures are developed and refined.

On Wednesday January 30 our AFL listed players, including new 2008 mini-draftees Taylor Walker and Aaron Kite attended training and were introduced to the senior Norwood training squad and vice versa. All of our AFL listed players look in terrific physical shape and all looking forward to the season ahead, which for some commenced last weekend.

With his team-mates in Dubai for their NAB Cup game, we were blessed with the presence of Nathan Bassett on the training track last week. It almost goes without saying that Nathan brings a professionalism, attention to detail and thoughtfulness around game plans and structure that demonstrates why he is one of the most respected and values players at West Lakes.

A third 4.5km time trial was held last Saturday morning in the city, James Gallagher crossing the line first from Matthew Dawes, Matthew Bartemucci, Ed McDonnell, youngster Mal Douglas, Brett Zorzi and Nick Gieschen who are all closing in on the skipper. Significantly Brett Zorzi took some 90 second of his best previous time, many players showed improvement which is most pleasing given the current training workloads and that the running component of pre-season is now focused on sprints.

Our State Under 18 academy squad members completed their second internal trial on the weekend, Ben Speight was impressive in the first game however took a knock committing himself hard to a contest and sat out most of the second game. Matthew Hill has been finding plenty of the ball, Josh Benbow has also looked good when given an opportunity to play in the midfield while big men Ryan Schoenmakers and Alex Stopp have been competing well at half-forward and in defence respectively.

Skills training continues at Coopers Stadium at 5.30pm on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's until the week leading into the Easter Thursday trial with Port Magpies when training will be Monday and Tuesday.
