Adare
Conference Centre
at Victor Harbor
was the location
for our annual pre-season
camp conducted this
past weekend.
Earlier in the
week the squad was
broken in 4 group
for the weekend
activities, teams
Wally Miller
(lead by James Gallagher
& Jamie Vlatko),
Jack Oateys
(Stuart Bown &
Heath Culpitt),
Tiger Potts
(Brett Zorzi &
Matthew Brunoli)
and Smokey
Dawsons
(Matthew Dawes &
Matthew Bartemucci.
Their pre-work was
to research four
defined Norwood
topics, namely a)
1984 Premiership
team, b) Norwood
players in the AFL,
c) Norwood Magarey
Medallists and d)
Longest serving
Norwood players.
As a first activity,
new recruits from
each team were required
to make presentation
on their allocated
topic. Presentations
were well researched
and an education
for new and young
players of our clubs
rich and proud history
and also an understanding
of the responsibility
they carry with
them in season 2008.
It
was up early Saturday
morning for a 30
minute brisk walk
along the foreshore
in the crisp morning
air before breakfast
and then to Port
Elliot oval for
a demanding 2 hour
skill session. Many
players then chose
to enjoy 60 minutes
of free time prior
to lunch body surfing
at Boomer beach.
Following lunch,
new Football Operations
Manager Mark Ross
formally introduced
himself to the playing
group, briefing
the playing group
on his extensive
football background
and also his vision
for our club, season
2008 and beyond.
It was then the
turn of the medical
group, head trainer
Gary Goudge was
followed by new
club doctor Andrew
McDonald in outlining
processes and procedures
for the reporting
and management of
injuries and injury
prevention.
The playing group
was then back on
the road, a demanding
6 km time trial
from the foreshore,
a lap of Granite
Island and return.
Matthew Dawes leading
James Gallagher,
Matthew Bartemucci,
Ed McDonnell, Matthew
Brunoli and Nick
Jackman over the
finish line, team
Smokey Dawson
collecting overall
honours for fastest
average time.
For two hours either
side of our Roast
dinner the formal
part of the weekend
was completed, coaches
and players in an
interactive discussion
developing and understanding
team strategies
for the forthcoming
season. Coming from
a successful era
in the Harbour city
the input from our
Sydney recruits
was particularly
valuable and insightful,
each sharing their
experience of what
it takes to be a
successful football
team.
The remainder of
the evening was
spent on the foreshore,
many playing cricket,
all enjoying each
others company,
valuable time for
recruits, young
players and new
coaches to get to
know current players
and vice-versa.
Sunday morning
was again an early
start, to Horseshoe
bay at Port Elliot,
another team event,
this time a 90 minute
Iron man event consisting
of running, swimming
and board paddling.
Team Smokey
Dawson again
taking the honours,
Matthew Dawes simply
outstanding in the
swim leg.
Following lunch,
Mark Ross announced
team Wally
Miller as
the camp champions,
collecting consistent
scores in all team
events over the
weekend including
Team uniforms, Group
presentations, Time
trial, Iron man
and Kitchen duties.
Thanks to the staff
at Adare Conference
Centre for their
care and hospitality,
the Port Elliot
football club for
the use of their
oval and the Port
Elliot Surf-lifesaving
club for facilitating
the iron man event.
Thanks also to
Gavin Goodfellow,
Gary Goudge (and
his team), Marc
Robinson and David
Couzner for their
efforts in making
the weekend a success.
Training now resumes
at Coopers Stadium
on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday from
5:30pm.
