Pre-season training (Update # 2)

The senior squad now welcomes a two week break to enjoy the festive season with family and friends after completing a demanding 6 week schedule that has included 6 sessions per week. Conditioning Coach David Couzner has put together a running program the players must complete in their own time over the break in an effort to maintain fitness levels over the festive period. On their return to the training track each player will repeat fitness tests to compare results established prior to the break.

New recruits Stephen Doyle, Nick Gieschen, Matthew Davis and Joel Coombes have all settled in well to their new environment, are in good physical condition, have impressed with their skills and are adding great enthusiasm and voice to the playing group.

Our State 18 Academy squad members Matthew Hill, Josh Benbow, Alex Stopp, Ryan Schoenmakers and Benjamin Speight spent a physically demanding weekend with their squad-mates at St Marks College in the City on the 8th and 9th of December. The squad were put through fitness testing, time-trials and two skill sessions. To their credit the Norwood contingent then fronted up to Norwood training on the following Monday, each taking between 40 and 60 seconds off their previous times for the 4.5 km time trial. Overall results of the second round of fitness testing were most pleasing with virtually all players improving on their initial efforts.

A pre-season camp has been scheduled for Victor Harbour for 3 days over the weekend of January 12th and 13th. The content of the camp will return to a more traditional football structure after last years activities that included raft-building and laser skirmish. Running exercises, a Skills session and Beach activities are on the agenda, while Leadership co-ordinator Jim Plunkett will be in attendance and facilitate the next stage of this important and ongoing program.

The team has also been working hard to ensure those less fortunate have an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Divided into four groups each team has a week to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible which will be delivered to the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) in time for Christmas.

Following the Christmas break skills training recommences on Monday January 7, the team returning to Coopers Stadium from 5.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, leading into scheduled trial games against South Adelaide (Saturday March 8 - Coopers stadium), North Adelaide (Saturday March 15 - TBC) and Port Magpies (Thursday March 20 - Coopers stadium).

The playing group along with the coaching group and support staff wish our members and supporters a safe and enjoyable Christmas with your loved ones and we look forward to providing you with many enjoyable moments supporting the Redlegs in 2008.
