Pre-season training (Update # 1)

The senior squad of around 50 players has commenced the fourth of six weeks training before the Christmas and New Year break.

Conditioning Coach David Couzner has put the team through a demanding running schedule with a view to establishing a solid base of fitness for the new season. This has included a 4.5km time trial, interval running and up to 16 efforts (in a single session) up the steep inclines of Montefiore Hill at North Adelaide with penalties applied to individuals and groups not getting the job done to expected standards. Between each skill drill on Wednesday nights at Kensington Oval the team has completed 2 x 400m runs. On Saturday mornings the team meets in four locations based on where players live and a member of the leadership team supervises 30 minutes of solid running. Timed runs will be held monthly to measure improvement and identify those requiring extra work.

After missing two sessions supporting his partner in New Zealand for the Netball World Cup Final, Captain James Gallagher returned to where he left off, at the front of every running pack, setting the example and adding a demanding and encouraging voice. Almost as impressive as our club captain is Nick Gieschen, who is in superb physical condition. After a frustrating 2007 that included little pre-season conditioning, key position player Ed McDonnell has been most impressive, a top five performer in most running exercises Ed is preparing himself well for a much improved 2008.

Season 2007 casualties Chad Gibson and Kenrick Tyrrell are both very welcome sights back on the training track and whilst completing modified programmes are on track for Round 1 season 2008.

Many of our young players who had a taste of Reserves football in 2007, including Benjamin Speight, Andrew Kirwan, Matthew Hill, Josh Cavanagh and James Skinner (all are still eligible for underage football in 2008) are into their second full senior pre-season and working hard on both on their skills / fitness and physical strength in the gym under the watchful eye of Brenton Hay.

To be continued..........
