Danny
Jenkins took a while
to break into Norwoods
league side - four
years in fact. Then
again, we know what
they say about lost
time and making
up for it. A sensational
underage player,
Danny had struggled
on the fringes as
a wingman and was
nearing his last
chance when he was
tried in a 1976
trial game, for
no particular reason,
on a half-back flank.
He burnt.
Consider what Danny
did after that.
There was his last
quarter smother
in the 1978 grand
final, the game
saver, the premiership
effort that will
live for ever in
Norwood history.
Then there was his
best afield medal
in the 1982 grand
final. With a record
like that in the
biggest game of
the year, only one
thing was left for
Danny to do - lead
Norwood to a flag.
This he did in 1984,
as captain of the
Historymakers, even
though injury kept
him on the bench
for most of the
day.
Eight years and
198 games after
he teetered on the
verge of failing
to make it as a
league footballer,
Danny stood in front
of the Football
Park crowd holding
the premiership
cup. Skilful, well
balanced, an excellent
kick and an often
spectacular overhead
mark, Danny was
one of the foundations
on which Norwood
proudly built a
successful era.
