Match Report: It was great to open the season with a win against Port Adelaide at Coopers Stadium on Thursday night. The only downfall was the rain that lingered during the reserves match and probably kept away a few supporters from coming down and watching a typical Norwood vs. Port game and seeing Nathan Bassett in a Port Magpies shirt.

We had two league debutants, Brayden Denmead and Lachlan Pascoe. Brayden is a 19 year old key forward from the Modbury FC. He didn’t look out of his depth and he did Garry McIntosh and Craig Balme proud the way he handled some Port players when some spot fires broke out. Lachlan is only 16 and played his junior football at the Golden Grove FC and is also the son of former premiership player, Andrew. It was great to see both families very proud down in the change rooms before the game.

Jace Bode loss the toss in his first game as co-captain and we started well kicking four of the first six goals but some undisciplined free kicks gifted Port three goals for the quarter. After quarter time I felt we got on top around the stoppages, with Cachia, Roocke, Panos and Webber all working tirelessly to get the ball out to Wilson, Jefferies, Fuller and Donohue.

Our forwards were excellent in slowing Port Adelaide down at every opportunity and also created some goals from nothing. Our defenders also repelled many forward entries, with Alex Georgiou keeping John Butcher to two kicks for the evening, and Levicki, Pascoe and Fuller strong in the air.

Simon Phillips was injured in second quarter and will most likely miss at least two games. Sam Baulderstone came off regularly in the second half which meant we only had 48 rotations for the evening, it also showed our strength and conditioning team have a done a magnificent job over the summer.

We handled the ball really well in greasy conditions and had 52 inside 50’s, along with 25 scoring shots, which was a real positive for the evening.  Brady Dawe had a terrific game as did Anthony Wilson and Matt Panos but I felt we had a real contribution from everyone.

The new rules were interesting, with the game being felt like it was being over officiated and in the end, 72 free kicks were given for the night. I don’t know what free flowing football is but maybe giving free kicks every 90 seconds is what it looks like! The main offender was Sam Baulderstone who is big and strong and he felt the wrath of the three officials for engaging body contact at a stoppage, which is what ruckman do, but not on Thursday night.

It was great to see some strong performances from the under 18’s and reserves, both having wins whilst the under 16’s just went down under the guidance of new coach, Paul Streatfield.

This week we play North Adelaide at Prospect on Sunday, it would be great to see you there!
