Match Report:  After a long and tough pre-season that saw many changes at the club including the way we want to play, round 1 saw us head to Prospect to take on North Adelaide in the season opener. There had been some promising football played throughout the trial period and the challenge for the group was to execute this for a full match.
Being round 1 for the seniors also and them fielding smaller squads than during the trials, there were several changes to the under 18 team that tackled the Eagles in the final trial the week before.
The first quarter saw Norwood control the ball out of the middle, led by Zac Bailey who had returned from state duties for the Northern Territory. Tyson Breden applied excellent tackling pressure and made it difficult for North to move the ball forward and when North did enter their 50 our defence were able to rebound well which allowed the ball to move up the ground quickly and gave our big forwards a chance to compete. Four individual goal kickers in the first quarter ensured an 18 point lead at the first change.
The second quarter saw two distinct periods of momentum. Norwood were able to pile on early goals through Lochie Charlton, Les Mundy, Cole Gerloff and Ryan North and the lead had extended to more than 7 goals. North kept fighting and were able to score 3 goals in 5 minutes late in the quarter to ensure the margin was 26 points at half time.
The message for the second half was simple – keep backing your kicks and accelerating the game and work hard on transition when it does get turned over. Unfortunately, our midfield didn’t start the third quarter that well and North were able to kick a couple of quick goals. To our boys credit they settled after that and regained the momentum. Corey Smith was competitive all day in the midfield and won some crucial clearances which ensured the North defence were put under pressure. Lochie Charlton kicked a goal after the three quarter time siren to ensure the margin was 25 points despite us not playing our best footy for the quarter.
The last quarter was always going to be a battle for both teams – a warm day in round 1 means that fatigue can set in earlier than usual but we were able to keep the ball locked in our half for large portions of the quarter and the defenders set up well to ensure if it did go towards them it was sent back in quickly. Riley Atkinson and Jordan Miller won some critical one on one contests which made it difficult for North to score in the last. The final result a 43 point win to kick off our 2017 campaign.
The upcoming easter weekend means we have a very short turnaround to round 2 where we will play Glenelg (at Glenelg) this Wednesday, 12th April at 7:20pm. Glenelg will provide another solid test and it is an opportunity for our team to back-up their impressive round 1 performance.
We hope to see you there.
